Plot summary

Where do I come from? For some, the question has a simple answer -- for others, the truth can be much more complicated. With the rise in popularity of at-home DNA tests, it's now easier than ever for people to uncover their family history and, sometimes, things their parents wish would stay buried. Interested in learning more about his family heritage, director Jon Baime took an at-home DNA test and uncovered a family secret that has been hidden for half a century. Featuring in-depth interviews with Jon's siblings as well as a treasure trove of family photos and films spanning 70 years, FILLING IN THE BLANKS takes audiences on a journey as Jon explores the meaning behind his discovery and expands on what it means to be family.

While I’m sure it causes a mid-life crisis

While I’m sure it causes a mid-life crisis finding out that your father is not biological, I find the documentary to be both disrespectful & distasteful. While I’m biased due to having a father pass at an early age of 3, I believe the subject of the documentary was very harsh towards a father that raised him. Furthermore, he calls his father by name several times while talking to his siblings, and encourages them to learn their obvious fate: their father is not biological. I find it extremely distasteful and depict this documentary as a way for the subject to rebel, much like a teen would their parents. While meeting donor dad & other siblings from the donor, he seems to have rediscovered his identity. There seems to be an underlining issue that was failed to be disclose, & seems to be a therapy session more than anything. Spoilers: Many times he refers to his father as an ‘asterisk’ and it seems very distasteful. Trying to add this asterisk to a headstone is absolutely cynical.

Well produced film on the after affects of a family artificial insemination secret. I feel like I've seen this before at least once but individuals on camera and the direction/editing keep the audience engaged.
