Plot summary

An estranged father and son are paroled from the same maximum-security prison with one unusual condition, they must become roommates. Their severed bonds are strained as the father battles to keep his son free from the lures of street life.

The movie had so much potential to be

The movie had so much potential to be a groundbreaking urban movie, a la Boyz In The Hood. But alas, plot holes. First off, someone who's doing time for Murder II isn't going to be doing parole after 15 years. Second, if a prison found out that two family members were in the same jail, one of them would automatically be transferred. Clay assaulting his son would have automatically voided his parole. P.O.s don't play around. And please, the P.O. would have smelled the beer in the other room. Not a plot hole, but just an observation. Blair Underwood's character is extremely unlikeable. Even after he redeems himself, he's still unlikeable. This is such a good story, it has potential. I'm hoping someone can remake this movie. Only have the dad in jail for Manslaughter 1. That would make the parole angle more believable. And make Blair Underwood's character more likeable, but still a brat. Make the P.O. and warden a bit crooked. Like the warden knows Jared is going to be killed in prison sometime soon, so he "accidently" gets Jared to transfer to his dad's prison. And make the P.O be bribeable. He can look the other way to a certain extent. He looks the other way when Clay beats up Jared, he looks the other way when Jared is drinking, asking Jared to pour the beer down the toilet. He even looks the other way while Clay has a quick breski. He reaches his limit when Jared repeatedly doesn't submit a U.A. and violates his curfew. If they're going to kill off Clay in the remake, make sure that they found evidence exonerating him for manslaughter, right after he died.

This is different

Iv'e rewatched this movie a few times and I like this film a lot. The storyline is different. Louis Gosset Jr. And Blair Underwood are a great duo as estranged brought together father and son. They're brought into each other's lives in crazy circumstances. I like how they navigate having to be in each other's space when there's clear tension, resentment and anger. The only thing I'm not keen on is a powerful scene near the end which I won't give away any spoilers. As a spec-screenwriter, I would have written the near-ending different.
