Plot summary

Jenifa finds her world turned upside down when a new neighbor arrives, winning over the community with his seemingly charitable deeds. As she strives to maintain her authenticity and the trust of those around her, she is drawn into a web of rivalry, unexpected betrayals, and a drug-related controversy that threatens to upend her life. With her signature wit and resilience, Jenifa must navigate the chaos while staying true to who she is.

This could be the worst of the 387

This could be the worst of the 387 films I've seen in a cinema this year, yet it was certainly popular with the audience who frequently laughed out loud at the antics of "Jenifa" (Funke Akindele). Like just about everyone in their township, she runs some sort of foundation for the underprivileged, so when there is a newcomer to their compound of rather grand looking houses, and he has a legitimate NGO with which she can associate, she determines to befriend him. Thing is, "Lobster" (Stan Nze) has a big secret to keep that when his wife "Olivia" (Nancy Isime) finds out, leads to a confrontation witnessed by our eponymous nosey neighbour and resulting in a sort of Nigerian equivalent of a comedy-fatwa being put on her head. Meantime, she is lured to a beachside resort in Ghana where she is ostensibly to work on a wedding, but that proves to be fairly complicated too as her wooing boyfriend "Shege" (Falz) manages to get everyone embroiled in some shenanigans with the drug dealing "Bebe" (Jackie Appiah). All of this mess is presented in the style of a very cheaply produced soap opera, it's episodes sloppily stitched together with an annoyingly haphazard amount of dialogue that ends up just adding to the messiness of the whole thing. There's no doubt that Akindele has a sort of charm to her, but she's trying to cover way too many bases here and the scenarios are way more contrived than they are funny. It's perhaps rescued, on occasion, by the legal eagle that is "Madame Bassey" (Bosola Aiyeola) who reminded me a lot of "Hetty" from "NCIS: Los Angeles" - only more menacing, but otherwise I think I'd have to take issue with the title. I didn't love Jenifa, sorry.

I didn't like this

It had its funny moments, its nostalgic callbacks, and even some well-thought-out twists. But in the end, the film felt overpacked, and the artistic choices behind what became the main plot were too thin, weighed down by too many distractions.I liked the cast, loved the acting, and loved the music-Lagbaja galore. It was a great reminder of his incredible artistry and what he contributed to Nigerian music. For fans of the Jenifa series, it was exciting to see many of the original cast return, even in limited roles. Seeing the core trio of Jenifa, Adaku, and Toyo, take center stage was a highlight, along with appearances from other high-profile actors.Improbable? Yes. Messy? Yes. At times claustrophobic, yet occasionally expansive in scenes like the carnival sequence. Somehow 2 hours felt like three hours, and there were far too many cameos.The stories often felt jumbled, as though the movie was trying to do too much at once. The side plots took up so much time only to end up running parallel to the main story and in the process, key elements of the abuse advocacy storyline were left off screen, weakening its emotional impact.The story could have been split into two movies and more invested into fleshing out those stories. The trip to Ghana could have been its own movie and the Domestic violence- NGO story could have been its own movie and fleshed out. Stellar actors were underused and others were left with two dimensional roles. The movie just felt long with a few genuinely funny and memorable scenes sprinkled around. High production value, mixed with scenes that looked like skits.I didn't enjoy it at all.
