Plot summary

Summer, 1943: wealthy youth in the Riccione district of Rimini play while the war gets closer. Carlo Caremoli, a young man who follows the crowd, has found ways to avoid military service. Then, on the beach, he meets Roberta, a war widow with a child. Roberta's mother warns Roberta to avoid Carlo, but to her, he seems attentive and to her daughter he is kind. Romance develops. Within a few weeks, Roberta is risking everything. Can there be a resolution between passion, on the one hand, and war, duty, and social expectation on the other?

Like many Italian films of this era, they're

Like many Italian films of this era, they're more a 'slice of life' than a story per se, but this was an agreeable watch all the same. The few special effects sequences were really gripping (and probably extremely dangerous for the actors!) Violent Summer is alright, but it won't stick in the memory very long. 7.25/10

An interesting melodrama with strong acting. The woman

An interesting melodrama with strong acting. The woman is supposed to be much older than him, but they look about the same age wise and in reality the actress she was just five years older than Trintignant. Interesting to see that among the war there was a privileged class that enjoyed a Dolce Vita state. The final decision of the hero, after he barely escapes death in an air bombing, to forsake security and his paramour and transition from draft dodger to presumably a soldier doesn’t exactly compute, but that’s what the script decided.

I have not heard of this film until

I have not heard of this film until it was strongly recommended to me and I've only vaguely heard of the director. It's about a love affair between a draft-dodging son of a fascist and an older, recent widow of a respected navy officer. It at times feels like a Douglas Sirk film transplanted into an Italian World War II drama and that's a compliment. It features excellent performances between the two leads and contains some brilliantly directed scenes which made me wonder why director Valerio Zurlini isn't quite as well-known as other Italian directors Fellini, de Sica, Rossellini, etc.
