This movie invites comparison with the rather disappointing 1969 "Picasso Summer," which was also about going to the picturesque environs of a legendary painter in hopes of meeting him. But this time instead of a rather boring couple, we have some feisty revolutionaries on the run from the law. There are beautiful young women too, and it may be my fault (I was watching the subtitles) but I didn't fully understand the relationships between the men and the women until suddenly they became important late in the movie. I'd thought it was enough to follow the attempts at meeting Dali, and I found the on-and-offness of that quest abrupt and repetitive. The movie does capture the sad emptiness separating Dali's world of imagination (or anyone's) and our material reality. Once or twice, I saw Dali on TV once or twice during his lifetime and I remember that failure to embody his own vision in his own being.

"Esperando a Dalí" is an enchanting journey to the sun-soaked streets of 1974 Barcelona, set against the backdrop of Franco's dictatorship. This film skillfully weaves together the worlds of art, love, and revolution through the lives of two brothers, Fernando and Alberto. Fernando, portrayed by Iván Massagué, brings his culinary artistry to life as he becomes captivated by the magical realm of Salvador Dalí's imagination.
The picturesque coastal village of Cadaqués, with its rustic charm, serves as the perfect canvas for this tale of creativity and passion. The character of Lola, played by Clara Ponsot, adds a layer of intrigue and romance, drawing Fernando into a world where the humble yet delicious wonders of local cuisine blend seamlessly with the surreal.
José García's portrayal of Jules, with his dream of enticing Dalí to dine at his chaotic but magical restaurant, adds an element of whimsy and ambition to the story. The pursuit of an artistic genius, Salvador Dalí, serves as the catalyst for Fernando's culinary journey, pushing him to create a masterpiece fit for a master.
"Esperando a Dalí" celebrates the indomitable human spirit and the power of art to transcend the constraints of a repressive era. The film captures the essence of a turbulent time in Spain's history while highlighting the transformative and unifying nature of creativity. It's a story of love, rebellion, and the pursuit of excellence, all set against the backdrop of Dalí's surreal world.
With its rich emotional depth and vivid storytelling, "Esperando a Dalí" is a sun-drenched love letter to genius and a testament to the idea that even in the darkest of times, the human spirit can soar to new heights of creativity and inspiration. The birth of "El Surreal," the planet's greatest restaurant, is a testament to the enduring power of art and love.
