Plot summary

After the death of his brother, Mick travels to America to seek Justice. Wrongly convicted of extortion and attempted murder, Mick is sent to Pleasant Hill Penitentiary's notorious death block 13. Seething with revenge after discovering the truth behind his brother's death, Mick's rage ignites an explosive riot as he makes a daring escape from Death Block 13.

Solid prison drama from Charles Bronson doppelganger Robert Bronzi. If you know Bronzi, you know his work is killer! If you like prison movies, this is better than more well-reviewed stuff like the overrated TV show The Mayor of Kingstown.

I can't decide if this is mindless trash

I can't decide if this is mindless trash, or genius shlock. It has a lot of familiar action movie tropes. It was entertaining occasionally. Surprisingly bloody! The acting, directing and writing seem quite amateurish most of the time. Our lead actor may remind older viewers of Charles Bronson in the slow moving, low-budget action movies of the 70s. I found him likable, even though he's very wooden. Can't say I recommend this flick, but for folks that like to riff on bad movies, it could be fun?

I went into Escape From Death Block 13

I went into Escape From Death Block 13 hoping for a solid B-movie prison romp. What I got felt more like a community theater production of The Expendables directed by someone who learned filmmaking from YouTube tutorials and maybe a fever dream. The acting is... wow. Just wow. At some point I genuinely started to suspect Tommy Wiseau was lurking just off camera, whispering "More awkward. Say it like you’ve never met another human before." Every line feels like it was rehearsed once, in a mirror, while drunk. Then there are the special effects, which I’m pretty sure were rendered on a TI-84 graphing calculator. Birds, helicopters, gunshots, nothing looks real. There were moments where I thought, “Hey, that might be convincing,” and then the illusion just completely faceplants. Like, I’ve seen better effects in high school PowerPoint presentations. Look, it’s not completely devoid of charm. There’s something kind of endearing about how hard it’s trying to be gritty and badass. But unless you’re into watching cinematic trainwrecks for sport, this one’s probably not worth your time. Two stars: one for effort, and one because I laughed a few times (not when I was supposed to, but still).
