Plot summary

Ema & Death’s-Head deals with the precarious border between humanism and the protection of one’s own life in situations when one excludes the other. Marika Sándorfi is hiding a Jewish boy during the dramatic era of the First Slovak State on the Slovak-Hungarian border. Šimon Holan, the boy in hiding, has a special ability to survive thanks to dreaming and a child’s fantasy.

A Moving portrait of Daily Life in WWII

This story of Marika, a young widow eking out a living in a foreign and hostile community gives a bleak but very memorable portrait of daily life during WWII.The scope of the film is narrow, rarely venturing outside Marika's tiny farm, but it certainly drew me in. In fact it's probably the most intimate portrayal I've seen of the trials that civilians endured as a result of the breakdown of law and order during the war.The movie cleverly draws you in emotionally partly through the tight and often shallow camera focus, but also through the terrific acting. At times I was surprised to find myself profoundly shocked even by seemingly small assaults on Marika's life.For me the only problem with the movie was the overuse of extremely shallow camera focus which sometimes distracted from the drama, but most of the time the cinematography was both beautiful and effective. A very worthwhile watch.

Possibly the worst movie I've ever seen

You know when a movies and you keep looking at your watch waiting for it to end. Well I looked at my watch 13 times in 2 hours. When it was over I looked at my wife and said " what the hell was that". The movie is all over the place. The director is terrible. The story is unintelligible. The acting is weak. Stay far away. Danger Danger.
