Plot summary

The film tells the true story of Elisa Sánchez Loriga and Marcela Gracia Ibeas, two women in 1901 Spain who fell deeply in love. To overcome societal and legal barriers to their relationship, Elisa assumes a male identity, enabling the pair to marry in secret. Their daring act makes them the first recorded same-sex couple to marry in Spain, but their love is tested as they face relentless persecution and sacrifice.

Even though it has some explicit scenes, this

Even though it has some explicit scenes, this is what happens when a woman directs this type of film. I can't stress enough the importance of having these stories told, true LGBTQ+ stories, with or without a happy ending. And this one is particularly beautiful, a lot of sad decisions and intense struggles, but a real love story in the end.

This period piece film is gorgeous in black

This period piece film is gorgeous in black and white. The plot moves slowly, thoughtfully; the cinematography is soft, gentle and, thus powerful. 2 young women in 1901 Spain discover they are inexorably attracted to each other, and they follow through despite the insurmountable social and political obstacles. Like so many literary works in Spanish, the beginning and the end come full circle. It is a bittersweet tribute to love, regardless of gender, and a strong reminder of how far we have come on this issue, and of what life was like before this progress.

There’s a good story in here somewhere but

There’s a good story in here somewhere but it’s brought down by cheesy/cringe worthy moments. Not to mention that a portion of the movie takes away all the drama and story and acts like pornography for 15ish minutes. There’s literally a scene halfway through where they make out while rubbing each other with a dead squid. Yikes! This movie is weird. It’s too bad because the first 35-40 minutes are pretty good. The rest just feels like cringe stuff and pornography. Skip this one.
