Plot summary

Sent to Mexico to help take care of aging Father Benito, young Father Amaro faces a moral challenge when he meets a 16-year-old girl who he starts an affair with. Likewise, the girl's mother had been having an affair with Father Benito. Father Amaro must choose between a holy or sinful life.

It's a film whose importance remains relevant. It's frank, unashamed in addressing such delicate and hidden issues, but it does get lost in drama and sentimentality. However, the scenes that feel "extra," like the encounters between the priest and the girl, generate precisely that discomfort and powerlessness one feels when discussing these topics. Many themes are touched upon that ultimately go nowhere, such as the mayor's case or the question of where parishes get their money. But well, there's little to criticize: as in real life, the Church's problems will remain unresolved. The film is straightforward. Don't rush to learn too much. If you focus on the indignation you feel upon learning about the "sins" hidden within our Catholic culture, you'll appreciate the film. It's simply one perspective on these problems, and as a Latin American Catholic, I wasn't offended. On the contrary, I'm much more aware of what my faith is and what it isn't.

The hush hush truth that no one speaks of or can't speak of because truth is controlled even through bad reviews. It’s about what it takes to be a priest. It's about the undoing of a priest through his awakening, the rise of a priest, and a priest that realized that he didn’t need the corruption of the church to serve God. A young lady, and two of the priests are the 3 main characters, that get entangled in a dance of Karma. K.S.
