Plot summary

After the events of The One-Armed Swordsman (1967), a retired Fang Gang is drawn back into the jianghu to protect various young apprentices whose swordsmanship schools have been terrorized by 8 evil swordsmen seeking to rule the jianghu.

Chang Cheh doing what he does best; painting

Chang Cheh doing what he does best; painting the town red (with blood) and featuring a band of killers, each with his/her own specialty. Tones down the whole bare-chested men thing a li'l bit. It's still the sixties. In addition to a young Wu Ma, Ti Lung and Liu Chia Liang (Lau Kar Leung), a couple of blink and you'll miss 'em appearances from David (John) Chiang and (I *think*) Yuen Wo Ping as the "Flying Sword King". The folks who did the commentary track on the first movie were looking for him there (IIRC), and might've gotten their info mixed up. If I ever act in a movie, I'd like to die like a character in a Chang Cheh film. That looks like fun.

I wasn't quite as taken with this sequel

I wasn't quite as taken with this sequel to the original film, even though it features the same writer/director and the same star. It's still an entertaining martial arts film for sure, but the story seemed a bit forced (the titular swordsman is living a quite life as a farmer, but is forced to come out of retirement) and the action, particularly the wirework, seemed comparatively weak, particularly once scene in a bamboo forest. I think this film is ditinguesed from the original too in terms of violence, which sin't necessarily a bad thing and actually did hold my interest a bit more. This sequel also had a bigger scale and more larger battle scenes, but like I said earlier, the film also seemed a bit more hokey, which did hurt the film. Still, it's a solid martial arts action flick and an extended and quite good finale make it well worth watching.
