Commercialization

Dreambreaker: A Pickleball Story is less a celebration of pickleball and more a warning about what happens when a simple, joyful sport gets swallowed by American commercial ambition. The film fixates on Dreamland and the personalities orbiting it, turning pickleball into a business drama rather than a community game. Watching it from New Zealand, where the sport is still grassroots and social, the documentary feels like a glimpse into a future we should avoid. It almost put me off pickleball entirely - until I remembered that this is the American version, not ours. Here, the game belongs to the community, not to investors or celebrities. If we keep it that way, NZ can grow pickleball into something far healthier, more inclusive, and more fun than the world shown in this film.*
