Plot summary

In a Gothic-styled monastery, a monk named Javier sees the face of another monk, Juan, and suddenly attempts to bludgeon him to death with a heavy crucifix. Both men then relate their own versions of a story of romantic rivalry between them.

Brilliant and original for its day. I saw

Brilliant and original for its day. I saw it since I borrowed DVDs from SLC and this one was in the collection. Although it was dated and slow at times, it had an excellent narrative that kept my interest. It was one of Scorsese's restoration films.

Though it may be a melodramatic love plot

Though it may be a melodramatic love plot, it is told with such startling music, visuals, and camerawork that it leaves one to get roiled up with similar emotions as the characters and those summoned emotions are then washed away with a wave of goosebumps by the film's symbolic bookend. The decision to tell this tale under two truths was both a wise and innovative one.
