Detour to Terror (Michael O'Herlihy, 1980) The stupid

Detour to Terror (Michael O'Herlihy, 1980) The stupid seventies disaster movie lives on thanks to the wide, wide range of cable channels to be found in even the most basic package these days. This particular piece of silliness is only notable for the presence of O. J. Simpson in a lead role, back towards the beginning of his acting career. As one might expect from the presence of Mr. Simpson, this movie is blissfully awful, but it's awful in a fun, cheesy sort of way. The plot: three guys hijack a tour bus from Albuquerque, NM, to Las Vegas. Lee (Simpson), the bus driver, rallies the tourists and attempts to stand up to the hijackers. As is usual with this kind of flick-- especially in its made-for-TV incarnation-- what you will likely wind up doing while watching this dog is thinking about how much more interesting it could have been had the screenwriter actually decided to take any of the obvious detours he could have taken with the plot. (I kept thinking that it would have been really cool had one of the passengers also been planning on hijacking the bus for some other reason.) But, like the majority of seventies made-for-TV disaster flicks, it's stupidly watchable, and you can while away an easy hour and a half if you happen to be lying around the house laid up with an injury or something. It's bottom-of-the-barrel entertainment, but it does what bottom-of-the-barrel entertainment is supposed to do-- entertain. Not one to go out of your way to hunt down, though. **

Fun TV movie time waster

A tour group (led by Arte Johnson!) heads to Las Vegas via a greyhoud bus (driven by O. J. Simpson!). Crap tables are soon the least of their worries though as they are taken hostage by a group of criminals (led by Lorenzo Lamas!). Seems they want to kidnap the wife of a wealthy businessman, but don't know he is on this trip with his girlfriend instead.According to the L. A. Times, this was the second of a three picture deal Simpson had signed with NBC (it was preceded by Goldie and the Boxer in 1979 and followed by Goldie and the Boxer go to Hollywood in 1981) and they ran it in February 1980 as counter programming against the Winter Olympics. This is entertaining and makes good use of the desert locations. The cast is good and Johnson even has a nice dramatic bit where he talks about being a lonely tour guide. Fans of Deathstalker (1983) will be excited to see Rick Hill in here. He plays - what else? - an athlete. The one weird thing is Lamas apparently adopts an Elvis-like voice as the ring leader. Also, look closely in the background and you'll see Simpon's future wife Nicole as one of the bus passengers. The film was directed by Michael O'Herlihy (brother of Dan!) and it was one of six tele-films he had debut that year.

OJ when we still liked him

Oh the good old days, when OJ Simpson was the likable, earnest former football player/Hertz spokesman/terrible actor/producer----oh the good old days. This movie, made in 1980 and executive produced by Simpson himself is simply awful, he should have stuck to football, this movie SUCKS.The story of a busload of tourists heading to Las Vegas who get hijacked and left in the middle of the fricking desert is just too awful to describe. The acting is awful, the writing-terrible, the dialogue inane, it is just completely lame. OJ plays the bus driver, who tries to save the passengers. Eerily, Nicole Brown Simpson plays one of the passengers and it is creepy to see her on the screen with Simpson knowing what was to happen to her later. If this is the only thing on TV playing on the TV late at night, run, don't walk away---it's that bad!!!!!
