This is a very engaging thriller, not least for the outstanding performances of the cast. However, a warning for parents that it contains a lot of nudity, some of which is unexpected. Sophie Marceau is shown nude in several scenes in which her hairy vagina is clearly visible. There is also an extended scene in which a black man’s penis is visible for around a minute and does not go unnoticed.

The looking glass.

Having played father and daughter in 'Le Boum' for Claude Pinoteau six years earlier, Claude Brasseur and Sophie Marceau are now cast as husband and wife(!) in this adaptaion of a pulp fiction novel by David Goodis.Herein alas lies the problem for he is now a decidedly ravaged-looking fifty and she a luscious twenty. Not only does the disparity in their ages ages make for uncomfortable viewing, as a couple they are clearly incompatible and cruelly mismatched. Claude Brasseur is a very fine actor but his character is frankly too much of a jerk to be at all sympathetic.The film is not short on atmosphere and Georges Delerue provides an excellent score but Francis Girod's direction lacks bite and the whole enterprise is devoid of momentum whilst indifferent supporting players including a bizarrely cast Betsy Blair, contribute little to the proceedings.

DESCENTE AUX ENFERS (DIDIER BECU)

This was one of the movies in where Sophie Marceau had to prove that she was more than just the teenage filmstar she was in "La Boum" and of course the answer by now is know but it was nice to see Sophie starring in her "growing" period. Whereas Claude Brasseur played Sophie's dad in "La Boum" he now is her husband. Being an aged writer he has to face the desires of his younger women and why he opts for the booze, his wife is seeking for some other pleasures and what once seemed like a lost marriage opens different horizons when crimes comes around the corner... It might all look a bit too romantic on paper it's still a more than decent movie that of course is standing on the shoulders of the actingpresences from both Brasseur and Marceau, and perhaps there are better movies made with the same subject, it's still nice to see, and there is even more to see than just Marceau's body.
