Another family way

Céline is expecting her first child. But she isn't pregnant. In three months, it will be Nadia, her wife, who gives birth to their daughter. Under the watchful eyes of her friends, her mother, and the law, she searches for her place and her legitimacy...Marriage for all , legalized in France on May 17 , 2013 , allows same - sex couples to marry and obtain the same rights as heterosexual couples .The film begins in voice over by the the chamber of deputies' decision ; 329 of them supported the "mariage pour tous" to 229 votes against it,The best sequences are close to documentary: the lawyer who asks for a certain number of "proof of their love " (that's the title) ,coming from the family and friends;the visit to a (male) midwife -another sign of the times which are changing-;the labor room , where one of the visitors (a man) faints ..The mother is,IMHO, the weakest link of the movie: the careerist mother who did not care about her daughter ,it's a cliché to end all the clichés,and it takes genius to make this kind of character interesting (for instance,what Ingmar Bergman did in " Autumn sonata " (1978) where Ingrid Bergman was a piano virtuoso too )Here this go-getter verges on ridicule, particularly with the cotton stuck in her ear! Too much screen time is given over to her -while the other mother (the real grandma,by the way!) is rather neglected - as if the director thought we did not understand she was married to her instrument.But the rest is successful : all the intimate scenes where the future mom is often afraid and confesses her fears to her wife ;a wife whose friends always tell her how hard it is to take care of a baby-it seems that they almost discourage her-The meal with Nadia's family ,the only scene where the second grandmother appears : this character,who is not that much ready to become a grandma , should have been more developed; the scene at the billiard room ,the only moment when someone behaves rather unpleasantly ,as far the "marriage for all" is concerned; another sign of the times, it's the pregnant woman who thrashes the boor.
