Plot summary

Chronicles three years of a middle-class family seemingly caught up in their daily routines, troubled only by minor incidents. Behind their apparent calm and repetitive existence, however, they're planning something much more sinister.

Though at times, this film could seem a bit tedious, it is a haunting and shocking film that won't be leaving my mind anytime soon. Handle always finds a new way to impress me in his films, and this film was so skillfully crafted that, without a plot or any insight into the characters, I could tell exactly what they were thinking. The Seventh Continent also uses haunting long takes and pauses that kept me intrigued at even the most boring moments and a second half that builds in one of the most terrifying ways imaginable as we start to understand what's happening.

Haneke's depiction and critique of modern society largely consisting of numbing and automatic routine is interesting (and the film is based on a real life event). No attempt is made to analyse or give an explanation of what occurs, and the viewer is forced to think... But if you're looking for entertainment you've come to the wrong place, and I would not want to watch this again. And in the spirit of 'critique', let me say this about Haneke and ALL directors who orchestrate real life death scenes of animals in their films: your lack of empathy underscores an essentially flawed value system that raises doubts as to the validity of anything that you are attempting to argue.

We have lost value. We arm ourselves with numbness by donning gloves and shoes, engaging in industrialization, automation, free trade, and outsourcing. What is value? We do not know how to feel its value outside the metrics of society. A new car, a new sound system, a new home. We ride the confusion, hear the confusion, and live within the confusion. Let us escape the relative metric where someone's misfortune becomes someone else's happiness, and let us go to Australia. Even if it must begin with handing over currency and booking a flight. Even if we may never truly realize the Australia before our eyes, just like a video on a screen.
