Plot summary

A modern love story in which a misanthropic, emotionally complex author of a hit children's book is forced to team with a beautiful illustrator after his best friend and collaborator passes away. As Henry struggles with letting go of the ghosts of love and life, he discovers that sometimes you have to take a gamble at life to find love.

This film has a quiet intensity — a bit unconventional, a bit messy, but anchored by some really solid performances. Billy Crudup plays the neurotic, emotionally guarded writer with a lot of rawness, but it’s Mandy Moore who really stands out here. She brings warmth, patience, and complexity to her role, and honestly, the film is better because of her. The story itself leans into the offbeat — not your standard romantic drama — and that can be both a strength and a weakness. It’s uneven at times, and not everything lands, but the emotional core is there. You can feel the loneliness, the slow shift toward trust, and the awkward beauty in two people trying to connect despite their baggage. Definitely worth a watch, especially if you’re into more introspective, character-driven stories. And if you’re watching for Mandy — her performance here is quietly wonderful.

Made in 07, I watched in 2024 after looking into Billy Crudup work. Was peaked by this movie he was in featuring Mandy Moore. Made in a time when I was most impressionable I was surprised I had not heard of this sooner. This a great little drama/romance movie I didn't see coming. A younger and might I say cute, Billy plays a character with many quirky parts while Mandy plays a role that's suited well for her. Some reviews critique their lack of on-screen chemistry, but I think they put together just enough that make this film the little charmer that it is. At first one may wonder how deep this movie might go with such a layered main character. One might want them to really flesh that out, but instead the little bit they do is delivered with intrigue and subtle humor that makes and builds to a decent payoff. Nothing overly complex, just a different kind of love story that is what I hope for but rarely seem to find these days. Also worth mentioning and another reason this jumped up on my list to watch is that this was Justin Theroux's directorial debut. Give it watch, It wont hurt your day, I promise.
