Plot summary

Barefoot Bobby Briggs, the legendary running back for the Austin Steers was today sentenced to die for his role in the armed robbery/murder at a downtown Stop 'n Go convenience store... It's five years later, and Bobby's appeals have all but run out, and the Austin Steers are - once again - on the march to the Superbowl, with a lock on the playoffs, when their wide receiver has a season ending injury. With their playoff hopes in shambles, the Governor of Texas controversially offers Bobby a furlough -- from death row -- to help rescue the Steers' post-season hopes, and even play in the Superbowl.

Wow, first person on flixster to rate this

Wow, first person on flixster to rate this... priviliged! Nowhere on the DVD case did it mention this was going to be a mockumentary. I expected something similar to "Remember the Titans", but instead found myself watching the intriguing unravelling of fictional events. After getting involved in the story, I found myself enjoying it. If they had sold it to the audience as a mockumentary it may be more popular, but due to the fact they hide this fact I imagine viewers feel tricked. Interesting themes but fairly stale acting from most people bogs down the story (Briggs and his lawyer are exceptions). Overall, I would only recommend someone watch this to view it as a mockumentary.

This is no light comedy...!

This ain't a Chris Guest movie... I'd probably say its closest cousin is "Bob Roberts" - for those who remember that excellent political satire. And if you liked that, then you'll probably like this. But if you go in expecting light comedy, you'll come away a little shellshocked - so beware!Die hard death penalty fanatics (like Scott Foundas) certainly won't like it, but for those with an open mind, it's a riveting examination of the issues. An amazing cast for sure, and a very irreverent streak: it hands up satire from everyone from the victim's mother (a great performance by May Kay Place) to the traditional french windbag droning on about the evils of America.Central to it all is Charles Durning who lends the film gravitas and is the film's emotional heart: a crusader against all odds, mostly doomed to fail, but who still sees it as his duty to carry out the fight, one inmate at a time.
