Plot summary

An elixir to our current state, "Dear Santa" takes us on the fanciful and poignant journey of a little known program called Operation Santa. For more than 100 years, human elves have been helping Santa respond to the thousands of letters children write and mail to him. This gripping documentary crisscrosses the country, following the most emotional letters as the elves work hard to make sure each child’s Christmas dreams come true.

This movie feels like it should be bad

This movie feels like it should be bad at times - maybe because of the lower budget or some of the simpler production choices - but it never is. The cast plays everything completely straight, and that sincerity carries the whole film. Jack Black is genuinely great, and the rest of the actors match his energy. It has just the right amount of cheesiness, but it’s earned, not forced. The direction and camera work keep things intimate, which actually works in its favor. It’s a surprisingly warm, enjoyable Christmas movie that knows exactly what it is and leans into it
