Plot summary

New York City newspaper The Day is in trouble. Even though editor Ed Hutcheson has worked hard running the paper, its circulation has been steadily declining. Now the publisher's widow wants to sell the paper, which will most likely mean its end. Hutcheson's only hope is to finish his exposé on a dangerous gangster before the sale is finalized.

Humphrey Bogart ("Ed") is superb in this tale

Humphrey Bogart ("Ed") is superb in this tale of a newspaper editor whose paper is being sold by it's owners. With all looking for their next job, he must try to galvanise his team into an investigation of local mafia kingpin "Rienzi" after one of their number is killed. Occasionally cluttered by a rather clumsy romance (his relationship with soon to be remarried ex-wife "Nora" (Kim Hunter)), this film really focusses on just how newspapers were run in post war USA: gritty, determined and authentic journalism competing with organised crime, personal and family interests (some benign, some less so), corruption and physical danger - all to deliver the daily news to the breakfast tables of millions of New Yorkers. Ethel Barrymore adds some class as the newspaper's proprietress who begins to doubt the wisdom of the sale as she is also drawn into the almost visceral nature of this investigation into a man who uses threats and lawyers to remain one step ahead of the authorities. It packs quite a punch for almost all of it's 90 minutes, and really does show off the star and the writing at their best.

Better than average newspaper drama

Better than average newspaper drama from the Fifties. Seems to be a more or less forgotten Humphrey Bogart film, which is too bad. I couldn't find it on DVD anywhere, and watched it on a tape I made from cable ten or more years ago. The film has three intertwining plot arcs done very skillfully by screenwriter (and director) Richard Brooks. Martin Gabel plays the bad guy, a mobster who is suitably menacing, without overdoing it. Icon Ethel Barrymore puts in a fine turn as the newspaper heiress, and the lovely Kim Hunter shines as Bogey's ex-wife. Bogart is outstanding as the crusading newspaper editor, doing everything possible to save his paper, and bringing low the criminal element. Definitely worth seeing, if you can find it.
