DEATHDREAM (1974) offers an interesting depiction of the

DEATHDREAM (1974) offers an interesting depiction of the different psychological traumas that soldiers bring back home and how they negatively affect everyone around them, sometimes strongly enough to implode entire families or social circles. It also leaves room for a phenomenon few people openly admit to: situations where life deteriorates so much after a soldier’s return that some quietly feel it might have been better if they had never come back at all. However, while the film succeeds in how it approaches these themes, the same cannot be said about its execution. It’s admittedly a slow burner with only a handful of memorable moments, often struggling to deliver its anti-war statements with real impact. The final fifteen minutes do manage to make up for it though, reaching a climax that will haunt the viewer with a strong sense of dread.

Creepy and distressing, Deathdream examines Vietnam PTSD that still bares relevance today. War is horrifying and I have no doubt that many veterans returned from combat feeling dead inside after the hellish events they endured. An incredibly important tale told in a very chilling manner.
