Quiet but Powerful Social Realism

The film works best as a piece of social realism. Rather than presenting the story as a conventional crime thriller, it focuses on the everyday human consequences of a bureaucratic system and public suspicion. What I particularly appreciated was the film's restrained direction. The storytelling avoids sensationalism and instead relies on a quiet, carefully observed visual style. The camera often stays close to the characters, allowing the tension to build through small gestures, pauses and glances rather than dramatic set pieces. This understated approach works remarkably well: the calm, almost documentary-like cinematography makes the events feel disturbingly plausible and grounded in reality.

Gripping movie

It is beyond me why this movie does not have a much higher rating. A gripping story about a single mother who, because of a big mistake by the inland revenue, has to pay thousands of euros in taxes. A fate that hit thousands of people in the Netherlands, leading to escaping the country, divorce and suicide, psychological problems and traumatized children, some of which were seperated from their parents. And many years later still is not solved for all victims. A giant shame for a supposedly civilized country. One of the biggest scandals in the past 25 years. Well acted, beautifully filmed. Deserves all the attention it can get.
