As mentioned wrong movie to what's advertised. This is indeed Al-Massir (1997). It actually did not win the Palme d'Or but it was in competition at Cannes.
This movie is called Le Destin/Al-massir (Destiny in English) and is indeed from 1997 where it won the Palme d'Or in Cannes. It's indeed in ARABIC and there are English Subs available on opensubtitles. I took the VXT one's and then you need to correct them with Subshifter +21/+21.5 seconds and then they are perfect. Thiis is what it's about: In 12th-century Al-Andalus, the philosopher Averroes is exiled after his progressive views anger religious extremists, but his ideas survive through his students.
wrong poster, movie, and everything
