# Cut (2000): An Underrated Australian Slasher That Deserves More Recognition
Cut (2000) - **Rating: 6.7/10**
Released in 2000 and directed by Kimble Rendall, *Cut* is a surprisingly entertaining Australian supernatural slasher that deserves far more recognition among horror enthusiasts. Arriving during the post-*Scream* revival, the film combines an imaginative premise, gruesome practical effects, a memorable masked killer and a distinctly Australian sense of humour.
For an Australian genre production of its time, *Cut* is an impressive achievement. While it doesn't necessarily reinvent the slasher formula, it brings enough originality and personality to distinguish itself from many of its American contemporaries.
## Story and Supernatural Premise
The film opens during the production of a horror movie titled *Hot Blooded*, where director Hilary Jacobs (Kylie Minogue) is brutally murdered. The production is abandoned, only for her daughter Raffy (Jessica Napier) to attempt to complete the film years later, bringing original actress Vanessa Turnbill (Molly Ringwald) back into the project.
Unfortunately, resurrecting the production also brings its fictional masked killer, Scarman, terrifyingly to life.
The film-within-a-film concept is one of *Cut*'s strongest elements. Rather than relying on another revenge-driven murderer, the screenplay introduces a supernatural mythology surrounding an unfinished horror production and the consequences of attempting to complete it.
It's an inventive approach that works particularly well within the slasher format, giving Scarman an identity beyond that of a conventional masked killer.
The story remains engaging throughout, although certain character relationships could have benefited from greater development, particularly Raffy's connection to her mother and the personal significance of completing *Hot Blooded*.
## Performances and Characters
Molly Ringwald is easily the standout performer as Vanessa Turnbill, delivering much of the film's humour through her wonderfully sarcastic, sharp-witted and couldn't-give-a-fuck personality.
What makes Vanessa particularly entertaining isn't simply the dialogue, but Ringwald's delivery and comic timing. Her cynical attitude gives the character an amusing edge, and she frequently steals the spotlight from Jessica Napier's Raffy, who is arguably positioned as the film's central protagonist.
While Napier is perfectly serviceable, Raffy feels somewhat underdeveloped. Despite being the director of the revived production and having the strongest personal connection to its troubled history, she's rarely given the opportunity to develop much personality beyond leading the group.
Sarah Kants, meanwhile, brings considerable energy to her supporting role as Hester, occasionally making a stronger impression than Raffy herself.
Kylie Minogue also deserves recognition for her brief but memorable appearance as Hilary Jacobs. Despite limited screen time, she makes an immediate impact, helping establish the sinister history that drives the rest of the film.
The ensemble benefits enormously from its distinctly Australian humour. The casual banter, familiar accents and irreverent dialogue give *Cut* a recognisable local identity, something that distinguishes it from the more polished American slashers of the same period.
## Scarman, Kills and Practical Effects
Scarman is undoubtedly one of the film's greatest achievements.
His sinister mask and enormous garden shears make for a particularly effective combination, giving him a distinctive appearance among the numerous masked killers of the genre.
The supernatural mythology surrounding the character is equally appealing. Rather than simply being a murderer with a personal motive, Scarman exists as an extension of the cursed film itself, making him a more unusual and intriguing antagonist.
The practical gore effects are another major highlight. The film delivers several brutal and entertaining murders, with convincing makeup and physical effects that give the violence a suitably nasty quality.
Scarman's garden shears are especially effective, providing some wonderfully vicious moments that should satisfy fans of traditional slasher cinema.
For an Australian production released in 2000, the practical effects work is impressive and remains one of the film's most enjoyable features.
## Direction, Atmosphere and Pacing
Kimble Rendall handles the material with confidence, delivering a visually appealing production that balances supernatural horror with the familiar conventions of the slasher genre.
The cinematography and production design create an effective atmosphere, while the editing generally maintains a satisfying pace. The film rarely loses momentum, moving comfortably between character interactions, supernatural developments and increasingly violent encounters.
Although *Cut* isn't particularly frightening, its entertainment value more than compensates for the relatively modest scares and suspense.
The screenplay occasionally moves through certain developments too quickly, leaving some relationships and character motivations less explored than they could have been.
The ending is another example. While the climax itself is entertaining and satisfying, the transition following Vanessa's hospital scene feels rather abrupt, providing limited closure for the surviving characters.
Nevertheless, these shortcomings rarely interfere with the overall experience. *Cut* maintains an enjoyable rhythm, and its combination of humour, supernatural mythology and bloody violence ensures that the film never becomes boring.
## Final Verdict
*Cut* is an entertaining and underappreciated contribution to Australian horror cinema, particularly when considered within the context of its release in 2000.
Its greatest strengths lie in its imaginative supernatural premise, memorable masked killer, impressive practical gore and distinctly Australian personality.
Molly Ringwald delivers a particularly enjoyable, scene-stealing performance, while Sarah Kants and Kylie Minogue make memorable contributions to the supporting cast.
Although some character development and narrative closure would have strengthened the screenplay, the film succeeds where it matters most as a slasher: **it remains consistently entertaining**.
With a strong visual identity, inventive mythology and plenty of gruesome practical effects, *Cut* deserves greater appreciation among fans of overlooked horror films.
**Final Rating: 6.7/10**
*An imaginative, bloody and thoroughly entertaining Australian supernatural slasher, featuring an excellent masked killer, impressive practical gore and a wonderfully witty performance from Molly Ringwald.*

With Molly Ringwald and Kylie Minogue
Slasher on par slightly .. ok maybe just in some areas with Freddy Kruger.
It starts semi seriously and then has these accents of pure absurdity. But the cast was such an eccentric crew, I couldn’t take my eyes off it.
Follows a highschool filmmaking group who decide to convince their teacher to finish a cursed movie and make a slasher.
They bring in Molly Ringwald somehow and make it happen
Theres a guy who pees and is clearly holding a hose, a beheading where the eyes look around after and other classic fun stuff thar was a riot to see.
