A better Panther movie than expected. Ted Wass’ first screen appearance is hilariously in drag, disguised as a street walker in a very funny, classically chaotic scene. For some odd reason Blake Edwards exacts much mileage out of gags involving inflatables: 3x to be precise, all of which are breathtakingly funny. The scene involving Herbert Lom imputing Cleaseau’s perceived character traits into a computer search is roaringly nice. The scenes taking place in Valencia are well shot and stylish, more so than Bondian Thunderball which undoubtedly inspired them. Ultimately it fails to establish a viable continuation of the series sans Sellers, but this may be more than a little to blame for the studio’s sabotage of the movie’s promotion, as noted by Edwards over the years.

More of a movie than "Trail of the Pink Panther", it restores some of the old Panther DNA: certain gags are quite hilarious and successfully hark back to the Peter Sellers years. Unusually, there is also an extended car chase that's both engaging and amusing. Lead Ted Wass never steals the limelight, and it's okay: his presence allows the film to exist, and he's serviceable in the part. However, the movie is overlong and gradually loses steam; by the end, the story has fallen apart completely.
