Clownery (2020) – Personal Review Directed by Emanuele

Clownery (2020) – Personal Review Directed by Emanuele De Santi Let me be completely real with you — Clownery is easily one of the worst horror films I’ve watched in years. And I say that as someone who’s sat through some pretty rough indie horror just to see if there’s even a sliver of creativity underneath. Unfortunately, this one had none. The concept is paper-thin and makes almost no sense. It’s supposed to follow a traumatized young woman trying to move on from a disturbing past that involves clowns and family trauma (I guess?), but the story is so disconnected and lazy that you’re left more confused than scared — or even entertained. You can tell there was an idea in there somewhere, but the execution was just a disaster. Director Emanuele De Santi, who also co-wrote the film, clearly had no real vision for what this movie was supposed to be. The tone is all over the place, the pacing drags in spots where it should move fast, and when it does finally try to ramp up the horror, it’s so over-the-top and ridiculous that it turns laughable. Honestly, it’s like they wanted to make Terrifier but ended up with a high school drama class project. The acting was abysmal. I don’t like to bash performers outright, but it really felt like none of the actors were emotionally present — stiff line delivery, weird reactions, and zero chemistry. It didn’t help that the dialogue sounded like it was written in Google Translate and then shuffled through five drafts without a single read-through. I can’t name a single character I actually cared about, or even remember. As for the horror? There’s nothing scary here. The clown makeup looked cheap, the kills were laughably staged, and the buildup to anything remotely suspenseful was either cut too short or dragged on too long. It fails as a slasher, as a psychological thriller, and definitely as a horror. This is one of those movies where I honestly questioned if anyone in the production even watched the final cut before releasing it. It felt rushed, careless, and completely unaware of what horror fans actually look for.
