Plot summary

David is a teenager whose parents are in a deteriorating marriage after their infant daughter dies. Clara is a chambermaid at a Jamaican resort who's hired to be a housekeeper. She and David develop a close bond, opening his eyes and heart to new experiences, and eventually leading to a disturbing secret in Clara's past.

Of all the movies I've ever seen over the course of five decades, this was THE. ABSOLUTE. WORST. OF. THEM. ALL. It was predicable while trying to be emotionally manipulative, and I utterly hated it.

Director Robert Mulligan has the distinction of being

Director Robert Mulligan has the distinction of being the only director to have a film on my TOP FIVE of all time and a film on my BOTTOM FIVE of all time. It baffles me that the same man who made TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD is responsible for this utter sanctimonious nonsense. From its treacly piano score to it's stilted dialogue and performances to its "shocking" revelations that make your average Lifetime movie seem subtle by comparison, this is an absolute mess and is solely responsible for making me hate Neil Patrick Harris for the first half of his career. There's not a genuine moment in its entire running time, and I'm sure this is tucked away toward the bottom of the resumes of everyone involved. Oi vey!
