Plot summary

In a mystical desert kingdom, young martial arts fighter Cord loses a contest to determine who will journey to take the powerful Book of All Knowedge from Zetan, an evil wizard. Despite his lack of a sponsor, Cord's rule-breaking nature leads him to try retrieving the book anyway. Help is offered by a mysterious blind man who gives advice as Cord fights his way through multiple opponents, discovering more about himself as he gets closer to Zetan.

This is not a great movie. This is not a good movie. I'm not even sure this is a bad movie. But this is a weird movie. It has the hazy appeal that a lot of films from the late 70s had before blockbuster action movies took over the industry. I think it's worth a watch if you have the time. It gets five stars for being a freaky little trip, even if the acting, cinematography, and script are a little off. I wouldn't spend money on it, but it's the great kind of movie to stumble upon on late night TV. I suppose that isn't a thing anymore though. It's probably on youtube.

This movie contains plenty of elements we'd now

This movie contains plenty of elements we'd now simply call tropes, but there is no doubt a fearlessness and honesty to the storytelling that makes the work function as a whole. Furthermore, for the limited budget, the scenery and production design all work to make the movie feel absolutely dreamy. It's definitely worth the watch on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

An odd production of a story co-written by

An odd production of a story co-written by its intended star Bruce Lee, but acted here by Hollywood's favorite Lee stand-in David Carradine. Alluring enough that a teenaged me watched it over and over on cable TV in the 80s, before I knew what real martial arts looked like.
