I caught most of this movie. Unfortunately the movie unpaused while I was gone, and since I was not trying to inconvenience the person I was watching this with I had to piece some of it together. Great showdown with the spear carrier and all those samurai that killed his master. That final shot of the samurai killed through the weird Japanese window was brilliantly done. The rest of the film was alright too. Good film 3/5 stars.

This may be the first ensemble road film I've seen, and it's certainly a comic and charming film. The title is a bit misleading since the mood of the story is very cheerful for most of the film. There are a lot of characters in the film and the only one that can be considered a "main character" is the spear carrier. Uchida doesn't give us much background on them and instead focus on weaving together all the character interactions effortlessly while keeping a good pace. I suppose the purpose of this was to show how people from all different classes and groups of society can live harmoniously without any social prejudices. Yet in the end Uchida subverts this idealism with a shocking display of violence.

Entertaining samurai flick with just enough substance to satisfy. Lighthearted most of the way, but the shift into slightly darker territory at the end is handled well. Well worth checking out!
