A Classic Italian movie with lots of references

A Classic Italian movie with lots of references to Italian film history, including Federico Fellini himself, who makes a cameo appearance as himself directing the famous Anita Ekberg in Fontana di Trevi scene from La Dolce Vita!

Scola, with the Age and Scarpelli screenwriters duo

Scola, with the Age and Scarpelli screenwriters duo, depicts the italian history from the aftermath of the Resistance to the 70's, especially in the economic boom period by telling the stories of 3 friends, who were used to be fighters during the war, Gianni Perego (Vittorio Gassman), a money-obsessioned lawyer who will sell himself in the attempt to reach social climbing by paying the price of throwing away his sentimental life, Antonio (Nino Manfredi), a nurse and supporter of the Popular party, who doesn't have the desire to upgrade his career, and Nicola Palumbo (Stefano Satta Flores), a married teacher and active member of the Communist Party who will leave his small town and his family for his ambitions of becoming a film critic and a writer. They are divided by fortunes, jobs, interests and political beliefs: they have nothing in common excepts their friendship and their past, made by war and common griefs. Their center, that attracts and rejects, is Rome, which waves their lives with Luciana Zanon, a young and beautiful Stefania Sandrelli, at the apex of her career: she is the magnetic pole on which Gianni and Antonio collide and clash. They argue, fight, lose each other for a long time, then again, at the end, they will re-encounter in a tavern many decades later (the same they used to go when they were younger and lived all in the capital), when "their discourse will unearths hostility and unsettling realizations". It's a movie that balances perfectly both historical and personal sides by succeeding in being choral and organic through a disillusioned tale that touches every of us, as italians who have lived that memories and and as Italians that we have not seen that part of history but heard from the stories of parents and grandparents. It's a movie that tells very much about what we are and what we have been, from the endless love of Antonio for Luciana to the illusions and ambitions of Nicola of becoming famous and known for have done something great in your life. And it describes so tenderly how that ambitions becomes broken dreams, for Nicola and for the others, like when they go, after the last meeting, to see Luciana, in the middle of the night, in line in front of a school with her sons, attending to register them because there aren't enough desks for all (probably one of the best scenes ever made in italian cinematography). In a movie very rich of cultural references, I need to mention Federico Fellini in the Trevi's fountain scene with Marcello Mastroianni and Mike Bongiorno on his TV program. A masterpiece.
