I lived in Indonesia for over 20 years

I lived in Indonesia for over 20 years. I didn't live as an "expat", but among my Indonesia brothers, sisters, foster-kids, mentors and friends. I became an activist in Indonesia struggling for human rights and rule of law. That cost me my safety. Given my perhaps unique point of view, how I see this film is going to be different from the English-speaking audience in general. The film is important. And it's enjoyable. And it's important. More important still, are the written works of Pramoedya Ananta Toer, the author whose book the film is based upon. I could readily mete out valid critical statements about the film. But, believe me, any such criticisms would be petty, superfluous and entirely beside the point. When something good happens, when an important story is told, when a film tells it to a larger audience, the verdict must be: It is excellent.

Mediocre movie but of historic relevance

I don't think this movie got much coverage in The Netherlands at the time of its release, but it was mentioned recently in the context of annual Aug 15 commemorations (ending of ww2 in the Pacific). There's growing awareness of the suppressed and even invisible position of many njays, who mostly came from poorish, islamic rural communities. Only after 1910 Dutch law allowed mixed marriages and legalisation of their children. My greatgrandmother was a njay, and just seeing a story dedicated to that period, and all racial complexities in colonial daily live, makes this a worthwhile movie . Even though there are some strange turns in the plot and too much romantic drama..
