Plot summary

In this fascinating Oscar-nominated documentary, American guitarist Ry Cooder brings together a group of legendary Cuban folk musicians (some in their 90s) to record a Grammy-winning CD in their native city of Havana. The result is a spectacular compilation of concert footage from the group's gigs in Amsterdam and New York City's famed Carnegie Hall, with director Wim Wenders capturing not only the music -- but also the musicians' life stories.

Ebert isn't wrong - and for me it

Ebert isn't wrong - and for me it was a curate's egg when I saw it in 2000, but I bought the DVD then anyway because the Cubans and their surroundings and their music are beautiful. I watched the DVD for the first time now (26/8/25). I always remembered Ry Cooder as resembling Jabba the Hutt in a Hawaiian shirt drowning out every single piece of music with his overloud, badly improvised slide guitar, which, however, I recall, is low down in the CD mix. Strange how jaundiced one's memory can be! It's not really quite that bad.

The music is phenomenal, and the story is great, but this film is too badly made for me to really enjoy it. It takes way to long introducing characters and only gets into the plot in the last 20 minutes. It's just very bad at telling a good story.
