I always hesitate to give negative reviews. Even

I always hesitate to give negative reviews. Even the worst art is usually very painful to produce. Artists of all stripes pour themselves into their creations and do so with what can only be described as bravery. So if, as I suspect, this is a sophomore effort for Paul Becker, then I hope he keeps making movies and keeps trying, getting better with experience. That said, however, there are currently two reviews claiming this movie to be 'great' and 'awesome'. Alas, it is neither. It is an awkward, uneven effort. A more experienced director could have solved this. All of the actors - maybe save Kress - were miscast. This is not to say they are bad actors. Louis Gossett Jr. has obviously paid his dues and is a worthy actor. But there is a difference between the right actor... and the right actor in the right part. The screenplay was was structurally sound but was flat and needed multiple further rewrites - something the right director would have seen to. Also, in a dance movie one of the most important above-the-line talents to get right would have been the choreographer. This was not done and, again, is the result of limited direction. The dancing was as flat as the screenplay as flat as the acting. This points to the ultimate failing of direction: a director's primary responsibility is to be able to successfully help actors navigate the intricacies playing out in any given scene. (We can't be too hard on him though. George Lucas wouldn't recognize an actor successfully plying his trade if he fell into one nose first.) I imagine this all makes me seem a little pessimistic. But truly: I wanted to like this movie. Peering out from between the frames was the movie that could have been. I only wish that was the movie I watched.

A great Christmas Movie

I went into it with no expectations but was surprised. I really liked it. Lou Gossett Jr's performance is good but Vondie Curtis Hall blew me away. If you are looking for something to watch over the holidays, give it a shot. I now own it. Lol.
