Plot summary

On their road trip through the southwestern desert, Alex and his girlfriend Scarlett arrive in a town in the middle of nowhere and take a room in a mysterious hotel so that Scarlett, who is feeling increasingly ill, can get some rest.

This is not a "bad" movie in the

This is not a "bad" movie in the traditional sense of bad direction, bad acting, bad camera work. All three are actually fairly good, especially the camera work. What makes this movie so bad is its intent. It's sickens and disgusts us and does nothing else. It's possibly the most nihilistic and unpleasant movie I've ever seen. I won't even dignify it by writing a synopsis. Oh yeah, there's a mystery involving the female protagonist (played by Jena Malone), but she's so utterly hateful that it's virtually impossible to care about the resolution (which, as it turns out, is pretty cliched). There is nobody to like in this movie. Ted Levine, a good actor, should have known better than to take a gig like this. Douglas Smith, as the male protagonist, is just hapless, and that's it. Ernest Hemingway said, "What is moral is what you feel good after, and what is immoral is what you feel bad after." See how you feel after sitting through this one, and you'll know what he meant.

Bottom of the World is both profoundly bad

Bottom of the World is both profoundly bad and profoundly stupid, all the while masquerading as a David Lynch-like piece of surrealism. But here is the difference: in a Lynch film, whether you like the characters or not, you are invested in them and care what happens to them because they are well-developed and meaningful in some way, whereas in Bottom of the World, the characters are drab, one-dimensional cut-outs. As a result, it simply isn't worth the viewer's time or energy to piece together the puzzle (if it in fact can be pieced together) because who cares what really happened, which means it's probably not worth the time to watch the film.
