Plot summary

Secluding herself in an island mansion in the Mediterranean with her servants and nurses, the wealthy Flora "Sissy" Goforth prepares for her impending death -- and she isn't the only one who's waiting. Known for his attraction to the dying rich, poet Chris Flanders ingratiates himself with the wilting Sissy. Although her friend explains Flanders' "Angel of Death" nature to her, Sissy embraces the vulture-like Flanders.

A near total disaster made by very talented

A near total disaster made by very talented artists. One can laugh at its excesses and its bizzare attempts at serious observations about death but I honestly don't understand why people hate something so strange and almost compulsively watchable (you can't take your eyes off of it). It's a true camp classic.

As so many have said, this movie is almost un-watchable. At the same time, as with a car wreck, it's impossible to look away! It's the kind of movie that when reigning Hollywood Royalty want to be totally outrageous in front of the camera, show off their grotesquely huge diamond, spend a fortune on a pseudo-philosophical dress-up party, and say horrible things to the help, they do. This ode to the Burton/Taylor ego was filmed in a purpose-built house in Sardinia [foundation still visible - Isola Piana], a Dali-esque cliff-top wonder that in itself makes the movie watchable, and cost just oodles to build. The scene with Taylor in kabuki headdress and Noel Coward high above the crashing waves at sunset is worth the price of admission in itself. I enjoy this movie as an artifact, with the story as nearly incidental; a study of the boredom arising from excess wealth, and something about death. "Boom!" is a favorite of John Waters' - that should explain a lot.

I found this almost unwatchable. I love almost everyone involved: Tennessee Williams, Noel Coward, Elizabeth Taylor, and Richard Burton, plus it's got a great setting in a remote island villa. It was just too outré I guess.
