I am enchanted

The film doesn't pretend to be a biography of the scandalous film star and singer Kalina Jedrusik, dubbed the Polish Marilyn Monroe, but is a loosely based portrait of her and artistic life in the early 1960s. The action takes place in a milieu of writers and filmmakers - Kalina was married to an older writer Stanislaw Dygat, and the two had an open marriage. Kalina flaunted her sex appeal, shocking conservative Communist Party leaders. Among her friends featured in the film are fashion designer Xymena Zaniewska, writer Tadeusz Konwicki, and film director Kazimierz Kutz. The filmmakers brilliantly captured the atmosphere of the era and the surrounding objects, details, cars, furniture, clothes, and small apartments. It's hard to believe that reality was so colorful, but it's all the more compelling to watch. The entire film employs a semi-realistic style, beginning with mannequins coming to life in a shop window, and the action is interspersed with surreal scenes of songs illustrating the protagonist's life. Maria Debska brilliantly portrays Kalina as a strong, independent woman who does what she pleases, and chooses her lovers herself, rather than submitting to her TV boss for the sake of her career. Her similarity to actual Kalina is amazing. There are also nudity scenes, which are beautiful, tastefully done, or completely natural, without unnecessary sex scenes. All in all, it was a pleasure to watch.

missed promise

I remember Kalina Jedrusik well from 1963-71, we went to the same High School (not at the same time though:) and I know her films and music. The problem with this film is that it doesn't really know what it wants to say, so consequently it says almost nothing about Jedrusik. It's not musical enough to be a musical, although it tries. It's repetitive. The story is too thin to last for the duration of the film. Although the production values are very ambitious the film gets almost boring at times. A great opportunity wasted by a weak script and an even weaker direction, but I'm not blaming the lead actress, she does the best she could do.
