Plot summary

Blood Road follows the journey of ultra-endurance mountain bike athlete Rebecca Rusch and her Vietnamese riding partner, Huyen Nguyen, as they pedal 1,200 miles along the infamous Ho Chi Minh Trail through the dense jungles of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. Their goal: to reach the site where Rebecca’s father, a U.S. Air Force pilot, was shot down in Laos more than 40 years earlier.

This would have been a truly compelling story

This would have been a truly compelling story, had it not been for the primary subject's utterly distracting displays of arrogance and inability to step outside of her own privilege while on this journey. The first example appears quite early on, when she fails to remove her hat at the dinner table of her host and riding partner, whom she is meeting for the first time. This introductory, and admittedly minor transgression of etiquette reflects a larger theme of entitlement that runs throughout the film. Numerous cringe-worthy scenes that emphasize her cultural incompetence overshadow moments of emotional revelation. That said, the scenery is breathtaking, the film crew impressive, and what little is heard from locals touches on the true complexity of post-war life in Southeast Asia.

This film is disguised as an action sport

This film is disguised as an action sport film about the 1,200 mile endurance mountain bike journey Rebecca Rusch undertakes through Southeast Asia but it is so, so much more. It's an educational film about the Vietnam/American conflict, a story of pure untampered human kindness, and most obviously a story of one daughter's search to find out what happened to her father. The film feels so genuine and personal you have no choice but to be personally invested in every twist and turn. The amount of empathy the director achieves from the audience is only matched by the truly awe-inspiring aerial and on the ground footage of the crazy adventure through Jungles, Caves, and across the massive rivers of three countries. Watch this shit!
