Plot summary

Confronted by Apartheid and a father who was Minister of Censorship, Ingrid Jonker searched for a home, searched for love. With men like Jack Cope and André Brink she found much love, but no home. Later, in his first speech to the South African Parliament Nelson Mandela read her poem "The Dead Child of Nyanga" and addressed her as one of the finest poets of South Africa.

Based on True Events (12,230 – 26 Jan 2026) In 1960, in Cape Town, Ingrid Jonker is swimming and asks for help. Jack Cope saves her and they learn that they are poet and novelist. Ingrid moves to Jack’s house with her daughter Simone and he falls for her. When Jack visits his two son, Ingrid makes an abortion and has a promiscuous life with Jack’s friends. Ingrid is the daughter of Abraham Jonker from the Censorship Board. She likes to drink a lot, is unstable and tormented by the Apartheid. When Jack returns three months later, he finds her infidelity and leaves her, initiating her downfall to depression. "Black Butterflies" (2011) is a film based on true events in South Africa during the Apartheid period. It shows highlights in the tormented life of the poet Ingrid Jonker, whose poem was read by Nelson Mandela in his speech as President to the South African Parliament after the end of Apartheid. My vote is seven. Title (Brazil): "Borboletas Negras" ("Black Butterflies")
