Plot summary

A famous Polish journalist presents a problem for the powers-that-be when he displays his full political skill and knowledge on a television show featuring questions and answers on a world conference by a panel of journalists. His enemies take away his privileges when he is away. The shock of being "unwanted" parallels a deeper disappointment in his private life: his wife has an affair with a jealous young rival, and after 15 years of marriage and two daughters wants a divorce. She offers no explanations as he tries to untie these problems himself. All the moves he makes are the wrong ones. He takes on drinking heavily with students eager to attend his seminar after discovering the class has been canceled. The journalist, once suave and commanding, is reduced to silence.

A Polish divorce drama and...

The life of a television journalist starts to unravel after his wife decides to divorce him. Director Andrzej Wajda's 1978 feature film drama 'Rough Treatment' (whose Polish title roughly translated means 'Without Anaesthetic') is set in a Warsaw which could easily be mistaken for the West, like several other Wajda films, where the deceit of personal relationships brushes up against political deceit. Zbigniew Zapasiewicz is good in the central role as the journalist Jerzy Michalowski who finds his wife Ewa (Ewa Dalkowska) leaving him for a younger man (Andrzej Seweryn), and subsequently having to contend with slippery lawyers (Jerzy Stuhr), problems at work (some impudent worm stops him getting his copy of 'Stern'), dodgy gas cookers at home (the future is telegraphed through the sound it makes), and a lot of deceit in court during the divorce proceedings. An ethically tinged possibly slightly misogynist domestic family divorce drama talk piece, about the raw emotional pain of sudden inexplicable abandonment by a loved one, leading to the ambiguous end, whose meaning will be based on a person's 'frame of reference'.
