Plot summary

Max is a handsome young man who, after a fateful tryst with a German soldier, is forced to run for his life. Eventually Max is placed in a concentration camp where he pretends to be Jewish because in the eyes of the Nazis, gays are the lowest form of human being. But it takes a relationship with an openly gay prisoner to teach Max that without the love of another, life is not worth living.

While this adaptation of the stage play clearly

While this adaptation of the stage play clearly fails to take full advantage of the intimacy cinema can offer, it does get the message across--throwing the gauntlet down to filmmakers that there is plenty of undiscovered country for an industry that just can't go without constantly making or re-making movies about WWII: let the queer Holocaust out of the closet, already. For me, Sherman's attempt at writing lyrics for "The Streets of Berlin" was the most traumatizing part of this endeavor... But it's worth suffering through to see these subjects out of the footnotes of history books and on the screen.
