Plot summary

MMA legend Patton James, now a commercial fisherman, is pulled back into the cage when his brother is in danger. Reuniting with his old coach Sammy, he commits to one final fight in one championship against the brutal champion Xavier Grau.

Beyond unrealistic. Main character has done no martial

Beyond unrealistic. Main character has done no martial arts training. Can’t even throw a proper fast punch. And he works all week on a fishing trawler for $400. And when they don’t catch fish they don’t get paid. Ridiculous. Even if it were true, it makes him look like a loser for not quitting. He could twice that doing Uber Eats. Then fighters in the One championship don’t get paid unless they win! Ridiculous. And then world ranked professional fighters go and have fights in warehouses on metal flaws without any care for safety. Ignore doctors (brain swelling). It makes the sport look like a joke.

Overall, Beast had the ingredients to be much

Overall, Beast had the ingredients to be much better: strong actors, a gritty setting, good fight choreography and a compelling central rivalry. But it needed fewer characters, fewer distracting subplots and much more development for Xavier, Sammy and the central conflict. The action is worth watching, especially whenever Foster is onscreen, but the film would have benefited from trusting its strongest characters and simplifying the story around them.
