One of the greats

I remember once upon a time, this move was something you HAD to watch, it was still part of your upbringing in Ångermanland in the 70s and 80s when I was young, it was culture and teaching combined in to a movie. It held back no punches with all the best known religious songs in 1945, those that could make strong man weep, that added to the drama unfolding. Back in the 70s and 80s this movie was still serious business all the way up to 1990 with the end of Swedish traditional culture.Laura Fitinghoff (Runsten), who was born in Sollefteå Ångermanland (1848), wanted to write a book that could cross between the upper and lower classes in Sweden, and avoid the sugar drenched class story of the time. In 1907 she succeeded beyond her wildest dreams with "Barnen från Frostmofjället" (The Children from Frostmofjallet). The traces can still be found in Swedish society today 120 years later. As an example you have the "Gullviva price for child actors" (Gullviva was the childrens goat in the movie). Over 80 years from the books initial release it would have at least some kind of impact on young people in Sweden, as well as old. It have had several other movie versions inspired by it as well like 1980s "Barna från Blåsjön" (The children of Blasjon)Only thing that could finally stop the success was the international media that entered Sweden in the late 80s, that together with the fall of northern society and the split up of traditional values, that in turn could not survive in the economic disaster in the beginning of 1990. So it sure took some doing to finally push the story it to hiding. But 80+ years of success and a memory of what once was, got to count for something right? When the last Northern is gone at least there will be a movie for international viewers to look for our better parts, what we once were (for the south of Sweden do not care).Watching this black and white 1945 movie today, I can understand if it seems not as dramatic as it was back in the days, and also maybe a bit blue eyed. But for myself, I must say it was refreshing to watch a movie where most of the people is actually good natured and spirited, that there is goodness in us all. Some of the parts were probably a bit on the nose at the end of the 80s, but have now become something new and refreshing in a day and age where everything have to be gritty and dark. It stands out as a positive perspective of what rich and poor can achieve to help one another, on that account you cant hate this move!Im a bit afraid that there will be nobody left who really understands this move when all is said and done. But the movie itself, well it have well and truly deserved a place in Swedish history, as a tale and a bridge between Ångermanland and Lappland, and a talented writer from Sollefteå.
