Plot summary

Northern China, 2004. When miner Zhang Baomin returns to his home, a small and isolated mining village, his wife tells him that their son has mysteriously disappeared while shepherding his small flock.

A dry, poignant movie about society seen through

A dry, poignant movie about society seen through tragic events and the harsh reality of mining business in China …one could compare “memories of murder” … underrated and wonderfully interpreted by its two main actors .

Some weaknesses to this film but overall very

Some weaknesses to this film but overall very good entry. The plot was both emotionally engaging and non-obvious and kept me guessing until the end. This film had a couple weaknesses. The sound especially towards the beginning was poorly done, in a few places, there was also a use of a dream state that was non obvious at the time and was never openly acknowledged as dream. (The fact that the rest of the plot contradicts it makes it clear, i think, that it was a dream state). It could have been better done and made more obvious which was a bit annoying. Besides that this film was very good. As this is somewhat a critique, or portrayal of a certain aspect of Chinese Society this film is limited in its overarching scope. For that reason I would say this a great watch for anyone into, or looking to get into Chinese Cinema, or looking to explore foreign thrillers. This film would also be a fine watch for anyone just looking for an interesting thriller. This movie is by no means incredible though and those looking for the like should search else where.
