Lost in translation. So this is about a

Lost in translation. So this is about a man having a midlife crisis (Engin Günaydin). He's trying to keep it together between his work, personal life, and imposing family members staying in his apartment, but it's not easy. Now, this is another one where I didn't know much about it. At this point, I'm just trying to keep my blog post streak alive (this will mark my 27th review in a row in as many days), so I've been scouring the screaming services for something new to watch. I've been watching more and more foreign movies, so I figured I could give this Turkish movie a shot. Sometimes there is a disconnect between cultures, and with Stuck Apart, I feel like this is one of those instances. Now I think this is a case where the comedy is not translating. The conversations that take place in this are all one-sided and unworldly. Nobody listens to anything that others have to say, and it makes it so I never really knew what exactly is going on. I'm sure things are different in Turkey, but this felt like the Turkish version of Charlie Kaufman, and nothing feels real. You've got a man paying a large group of people to party with just two people. There's a woman in a coffee shop, stuck repeating the same two lines over and over again like a skipping record. There's a child that is in charge for some reason and terrorizes everybody who crosses his path. None of this makes sense, at least not to me. I spent the first half of this movie just wanting to crack what exactly these characters or even this story are all about, and I just grew weary of trying. The main actor, played by Günaydin, is likable enough, but most of his problems seem to stem from his inability to stand up for himself, which makes it hard to root for him. Everybody else is all too wrapped up in their own affairs, so it's not like I could form a connection there, either. I'm willing to accept that this may just be me. I can only speak for myself, and this struck me like I was watching the series finale of a show that I never watched before, so I had no frame of reference. I could never tell where the story would go next, so I guess that can be counted as a pro, but I also never fully grasped what was going on. I almost don't want to rate this movie because I am so out of the loop, but I have to, so I will call it as I see it.

This is simply an inspired movie...a dramadey in

This is simply an inspired movie...a dramadey in the truest sense of the word- you'll laugh, you'll cry. This movie was pitch perfect in tone. I think the people who didn't like this movie were expecting more of a low brow comedy, as opposed to what this film is- a comedy that makes you question the existential realities of life. Don't watch this movie distracted by your phone, to 'get' this movie it requires your full attention. For lovers of film in general and for lovers of international cinema in particular, this film is a must see.

Nice drama, mediocre absurd comedy

The expectations were quite high for this movie since the writers, directors and cast are all well-known names with a good reputation in the Turkish movie industry. However, the expectations weren't met and this affected the experience badly beyond the actual quality of the movie.In fact, this movie is a nice drama. And if it were a pure drama instead of trying to be an (absurd) comedy at the same time, I think it would be a great movie. Even though making a good drama movie should be harder than making a comedy movie; failing in comedy is also easier and as simple as failing to make people laugh. Unfortunately, Azizler(Turkish) or Stuck Apart failed on that for the most part. Besides, absurdity in this movie felt over the top and unnecessary. One might say that this over the top absurdity harmed the comedy further or even the succeeded drama. All in all, these factors contributed to the fact that absurd comedy and drama didn't match well for this one.Whereas the drama around "loneliness" was pretty solid. We have characters with different types of problems with loneliness and this contrast gives a nice depth to the story. The acting overall was pretty good too, as expected. Engin Gunaydin as the leading role was flawless. Haluk Bilginer was also great as "Erbil". I truly liked Erbil and his character background was beautiful.In conclusion, if you remove or ignore the discordant absurd comedy parts, you will have a well-done drama. So I think this movie still worth a watch. But as a drama rather than a comedy.
