An amazing first hand account of the trauma

An amazing first hand account of the trauma of this amazing man, who helped countless others by sharing his story after 60 years. Very powerfully told.

I cried. This one really hit me. I didn’t expect this movie to get to me the way it did. Knowing it’s a true story makes it hit even harder. The Optimist isn’t flashy or dramatic in a big Hollywood way—it’s quiet, real, and deeply human. It’s about pain, survival, and what happens when someone finally opens up after holding it all in for so long. That part just stayed with me. Stephen Lang absolutely broke me in this. You can feel everything he’s carrying without him having to say much. And the connection he builds with the younger character feels so genuine—like watching two people who really need each other, even if they don’t realize it at first. There were moments where I just lost it. This is one of those movies that reminds you how powerful real stories are. It hit close to home in a way I didn’t expect, and I’m honestly still thinking about it. Just beautiful.

It’s hard to imagine a story of hope

It’s hard to imagine a story of hope, optimism and the power of the human spirit in a film about a concentration camp survivor. But Finn Taylor achieves it, and beautifully. “The Optimist.” A film that shows us our commonalities, rather than our differences. A powerful movie with a much-needed message. Especially in these times. Made me cry, which I don’t do often. Based on a true story.
