Plot summary

Using only archive film and a new musical score by the band Mogwai, Mark Cousins presents an impressionistic kaleidoscope of our nuclear times – protest marches, Cold War sabre-rattling, Chernobyl and Fukishima – but also the sublime beauty of the atomic world, and how x-rays and MRI scans have improved human lives. The nuclear age has been a nightmare, but dreamlike too.

4/5. An experimental documentary with almost no narration and no original shooting. Mark Cousins and his team give us another masterpiece, with the edited archive footage working in complete harmony with the music from the Scottish band Mogwai.

Who needs Oppenheimer when you've got this?

The first viewing of my Masters course brings an unsettling and thought-provoking film that places the fallout and consequences of atomic weaponry and action at the forefront of its narrative whilst acknowledging both the benefits and issues that the science has resulted in.Using entirely archival footage is a fantastic use of perspective and presentation of narrative to root the film in its reality whilst forcing the analysis of its subject matter into a sure focal point. Admittedly, it could become a little repetitive, but the frantic piecing together of visuals and footage paired with a fantastic soundtrack, create a brilliant insight into the path this modern world is treading that is definitely worth checking out.
