Plot summary

Four socialites unexpectedly clash: heiress Brooke Carter runs into gambler Johnny Spanish at the race track while playboy Michael O. Pritchard nearly runs into stage star Kitty O'Kelly with his car. Backstage at Kitty's show, it turns out she and Brooke are old friends who attended public school together. The foursome do the town, accompanied by Brooke's companion Elizabeth, who throws herself at Michael's butler and chauffeur Rodney James.

Despite its commercial and critical failure, the (admittedly misguided) effort put into the film can still be perceived. The settings are stunning and the blithe humour offers some counterbalance to the sub-par singing: paradoxically, this musical would have been much better without musical numbers. The director's cut released in 2013 is more enjoyable.

It's so boring and jsut a whole lot

It's so boring and jsut a whole lot of nothing. The acting I guess is alright enough but everything else is just subpar. This falls right into Bogdonvichs wheelhouse and should work better than it does. But the direction is so basic and nothing pops despite this having a ton of production value and nailing that 30's look asetic wise. this also has a golden era tone to it as well. The biggest problem is the music numbers aren't good in general. Shepard isn't bad and probably the best song wise. Reynolds is suprisngly ok but everyone else can't hit high notes well or is off slightly and the lyrics aren't anything catchy or memorable. The two in general have some chemistry for what it's worth but aren't given much beyond flat humor and numbers. The dancing also is very basic or barely done. They try tap dancing here but Fred Astaire this isn't. It's amazing also how despite all the big names of the time, the production value, and the director behind it how NONE of the numbers pop or feel like they are filled with life. It isn't sung well, the dancing doesn't make up for it, and the colors don't pop either so that means half the film has nothing going for it. The actual love story is so meandering and jumpy. We go between two couples once they meet and stuff just happens before they break up and get back together. Typical Romance stuff. I was so bored out of my mind not because anything is brokenly bad here but it's so repetitive, meandering, uninteresting to look, listen to, and I didn't care for any characters that it felt like a 4 hour slog watching this. I don't know much about the source material but this film did nothing to make me want to find out more. Skip It.
