I have only seen a few Asterix films

I have only seen a few Asterix films, this one however seems a little less fun than the last one I watched which was a much earlier one. Maybe because it's all the same stuff, Romans and magic potion and Obelix eating. Still an entertaining enough affair.

Out of all the Asterix films I've seen

Out of all the Asterix films I've seen thus far, this one seems to be the most rushed. It just seems like it went at a very fast pace, even by the standards of '90s animation to get things done with. The animation, while not bad, feels like a downgrade compared to the Big Fight (they even blatantly reuse footage near the end). The songs are unremarkable. The humour, while occasionally funny, seems more focused on animal antics rather than what Asterix fans want: wordplay that whets linguists' appetites and Roman slapstick. It also doesn't help that, in my opinion anyway, the comic on which the movie is based: Asterix and the Great Crossing was one of Goscinny's weaker stories. Panels either had recycled artwork (Asterix and Obelix's attempts at communication through body-language that don't quite work) or are just empty squares with floating speech-bubbles and while it is a foreign land, Asterix & Obelix were kind of mean, seeing how they left at night. But that's just my opinion on the original comic. To its credit, the movie's voice acting is some of the better out of a majority of English dubs for Asterix. While the title character's Twelve Tasks and XXL video game subseries voices are the ones that I accept as Asterix's voices, his Scouser (that's an English accent and dialect commonly associated with Liverpool, FYI) voice isn't half-bad. Some of the other voices feel stranger by comparison. Mainly Cacofonix's voice. Sure, it makes sense for his CHARACTER, but not his DESIGN, if that makes sense. And given how serious the stakes are for the village subplot, there could've been potential for an examination of whether or not the indomitable Gauls should always rely on their magic potion. The script even says "You're nothing without your potion" That could've been thought-provoking. Especially since at some points (most notably the Big Fight comic book - lots of sentences in parentheses in this review, eh?) the Gauls have shown instances of Roman bashing without the potion or Obelix. I don't hate Asterix Conquers America, it's just weak and rushed. Better than the first Asterix film from 1967 and the American dub of the Big Fight movie but this is still one Asterix movie that can be skipped. Oh, and yes, you weren't hallucinating, the animators actually took time to animate somebody's private parts with the pubic hairs and everything. These Germans are crazy!
