Agitator is a slow-burning crime story filled with unpredictability and sudden bursts of violence. One choice sets off a ripple effect among many characters, pushing them over the edge as they pursue power and exact revenge. While the pacing is slow to begin with, the film’s second half is most exciting and gripping, and the dialogue is continually snappy and feels realistic. With so many characters on screen, I must confess that I sometimes struggled to process everything happening to begin with, and it feels like there is a far bigger story than this on-screen can contain. I enjoyed watching the chain of events unfold, primarily as the film showcases classic yakuza tropes through gritty tones and visuals. A pervasive sense of betrayal keeps the film engaging right up to the credits.

A refreshing take on the mobster movie

I saw this movie as the last movie during the Rotterdam Film Festival, and was positively surprised by a story of values, moral, and ethics in the Japanese mobster scene without getting top-heavy. Even though action can be slow by European and US standards, this gives the movie that extra vibe that you can't expect from the next Lethal Weapon.

This could be a decent introduction into Japanese cinema, in the sense that it's not too heavy on the Japanese side, but still something a US director would never do (especially the slowed down shooting of one of the main characters leaves an impression).
