Plot summary

Adolfo, a thirty something security guard, is going through a bad patch. Not only his lifetime girlfriend has just to finished with him to be a guy with no ambition but, moreover, he becomes the target of a series of thugs led by Vázquez, a dangerous criminal who has just escaped from jail. Also he discovers that his father has a double identity. He is not a farmer engaged in the production of cold meat – as Adolfo has believed all his life, but Anacleto, a secret agent who is a bit down and the man who locked Vázquez up in jail thirty years ago. Adolfo will have to leave his comfort zone and work with his father, the person that Adolfo get on worse with in the world to survive the revenge of Vazquez and while, between shootouts and chases, trying to get his girlfriend back.

Good spoof movies are hard to come by

Good spoof movies are hard to come by nowadays. Gone are the days of actual care and intelligence going into spoofs like Young Frankenstein. Now we're subject to the Date Movies of the world. Films that go for the laziest jokes possible instead of actually finding something that they could legitimately poke fun of. I think, legitimately, the last great spoof we got was Black Dynamite (one of the funniest movies I have ever seen). It's been EIGHT years since that. This brings us to the spy movie which, with James Bond and Jason Bourne is RIPE for spoofing. We have several of those with OSS 117 films starring Jean Dujardin. You could make the argument for movies like Kingsman or Spy, but I wouldn't agree with either of those. Both Kingsman and Spy, mostly the latter, are subversive. They poke fun at some of the tropes associated with the genre, but they're not full-on spoofs, at least to me. And this brings us to this movie which, really, cannot be described as a spoof either. Nor can it be called subversive, it doesn't really turn the tropes associated with the genre upside down. I don't really wanna say it fully adheres to them, but there's some common themes here. But, even with all of that, I had quite a fun time watching this movie. Is it the best comedy out there? No, not really. Hell, it might not even be funnier than I Don't Feel at Home in this World Anymore, a movie I reviewed some days ago. If you're looking for something to rival some of the funniest films you've ever seen in your life, then you're barking up the wrong tree. This is not that movie and it will never be that movie. The thing about this movie is that its comedy is more enjoyable if you speak Spanish. My native tongue is Spanish, so the movie is funnier to me than an American who might not even comprehend the verbal creativity it takes to come up with some of these insults. That's not to say that they can't get some enjoyment out of it, but it's best enjoyed if you speak Spanish. And even then, since I am not from Spain, there are certain words or phrases that are just culturally different and even I won't understand. I don't think I noticed that with any of the jokes though, the humor does attempt to be fairly broad to appeal as many people as possible. The story is simple. Anacleto's arch-nemesis, Vazquez, escapes and decides to target his son. Anacleto, who has never been there for his son or told him of this real job, comes back to protect him from danger. Simple enough story, but, of course, Anacleto and Adolfo start to bond, getting to know each other and coming to terms with who they are as people. The movie is certainly entertained me and made me laugh, but I think the movie's as enjoyable as it is thanks to its cast. The cast is solid all-around, but the film's comedic highlight would have to be Berto Romero, who plays Adolfo's goofy friend/boss/wingman. Carlos Areces, who plays the villain, is always good and he has some memorable scenes here as well. I think that, with a weaker cast, I might not have enjoyed this movie so much. Maybe I was in a great mood yesterday. Maybe on a 'normal' day I wouldn't have liked this movie. The film relies a lot on, as I mentioned, creative cursing, but it's not as if that's the only thing they rely on. They at least try to have a solid script with likable characters, even if there's no depth to any of them. There's action sequences, but they're nothing to write home about. I've been spoiled by The Raid, what can I say? Seriously though, there's nothing really wrong with the action scenes, they're just not the film's strengths. I wouldn't mind seeing a sequel to this movie. It's not like it's required, I don't really NEED to see a sequel, but I would be open to seeing one if they did make it. The film, while being a self-contained story, left its ending open-ended enough, with Adolfo now taking over the Anacleto agent name. So they could pick up with that and tell another story. Again, it's not essential, but it's possible. With that said, this is a solid and enjoyable movie, I'd recommend it only if you have full dominion of the Spanish language. The film is best enjoyed like that.
